Building a family has always been something I circled back to throughout my life. It wasn’t until I met M that I recognized how lucky I am that I get to build a family ON PURPOSE with a person I trust. M has been a rock and guiding light for me throughout our relationship and I’d like to think she’d say the same for me. I won’t say I never had second thoughts about building a family with her because that would be a lie. There were times when I thought just the two of us and a small dog was enough to sustain us. But when we finally seriously started talking about taking this leap I knew without a doubt we were making the right decision for us.
M mentioned the “imagine a parenting nightmare” game we played. It was during those moments that I said to myself, “we’re ready.” Even if we disagreed on how to handle something we listened to each other. We were willing to do whatever was best for this nonexistent child, whether they liked it or not. Could we completely forget this game and what we said in that moment when we have an actual moody teenager with raging hormones? Of course! But we’ll always have each other for support. We are truly doing this TOGETHER.
Despite the ups and downs that life and depression and anxiety throws our way, I know that we are a team. I know that’s corny and many people think they’re a team, but I think we know what one another needs. It’s like [insert sporting reference], ya know? Do we always supply what the other demands? No, of course not because we’re only kinda perfect not 100% perfect, but I think we strive to do our absolute best and that’s how we’re approaching parenting. We’re taking the things that we’ve learned and we’re manipulating them in a way that will work best for our family, for our team!
Building a family was never the most important thing in my life, but now that we’ve started and I see the excitement that fills us both I can’t imagine that there was ever a time when we thought we wouldn’t or couldn’t parent. Now that we’ve started this journey I know that our team is missing a very important player and I can’t wait to add them in the hopefully near future.
