We’ve jumped on board this blogging process a little late, as it turns out. A lot has already happened on our journey to growing our family! To get everyone up to date and memorialize some of the big steps we’ve already taken, here are a few key milestones we’ve hit thus far. More details on each will come in the coming days.
- Early Summer 2018: We started discussing in earnest our desire to grow our family. We began casually perusing various cryobanks in search of the ideal donor.
- Late July 2018: We spotted a donor that we really liked, and “favorited” him online so we got updates about his inventory.
- Aug. 7, 2018: We purchased sperm from Xytex – things were getting real!
- Aug. 14, 2018: Our consult with Shady Grove, where we learned about the *many* steps it would take to get to the baby-making process. And we met Dr. Devine for the first time!
- August through November (seriously) 2018: Test, paperwork, more tests, blood tests, ultrasounds, more tests!
- Nov. 20, 2019: We meet with Dr. Devine about the results of all 582,382 tests we had done. She tells us that our test results are amazing and, boy, are we fertile: chances are more likely than not that we will have a little one after only one try. We cross our fingers she’s right.
- Dec. 2018: Just when we thought we were done with tests, Dr. Devine adds a few more to the list, including a mock embryo transfer or, as we liked to call it, the “dress rehearsal.”
- Jan. 2018: T starts taking prenatal vitamins, which makes things seem very serious all the sudden.
- Jan. 8, 2019: We got all the financial business sorted out with Shady Grove and M’s fertility-specific insurance, Progyny. All the insurance ducks were now in a row.
- Jan. 14, 2019: Our “social work” consult (required by Shady Grove) to, I guess, ensure our mental soundness? Spoiler alert: we apparently came across as uninteresting enough to be cleared.
So now you’re all caught up! As far as we can tell, we’re basically ready to go now. We have to learn how to give each other injections for when the time comes, but otherwise, it’s just a matter of picking a start date. Things feel very real now and I think it’s safe to say we are both starting to feel downright giddy about the whole thing.
